In most any other field, if an employee consistently made this many errors, they would be instructed to improve their hit rate or asked to leave. But given that journalism is such a public field, have we simply begun to accept such shoddy work as acceptable?
I understand that the immediacy of news reporting has been increased with the intrusion of blogs and citizen reporting, but both old and new school journalists need to take more pride in ensuring accuracy. Technological innovation cannot be used as an excuse, and more importantly, employing such a short term strategy will only make sustaining and eventually rebuilding a long-term business more difficult.
